Location & Hours

The St Kilda Esplanade Market is located on The Esplanade in St Kilda, Victoria, Australia. Open every Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm (5 pm daylight savings hours) except for the second Sunday in February due to the St Kilda Festival.


Art & Crafts

Please note we are no longer accepting applications from jewellery, soap, photography or candle makers as we have reached our maximum ratio for these products.

Applications are filled out online and will be submitted electronically.

You can save your application and return to it at any time by retaining the Primary Stallholder Name, Phone and Postcode.

You must complete all elements of the application, including accurate photos of stall set-up, workspace/ making images and entire product range to be sold at the market, or your application will not be reviewed.

Applications can only be made online. Hardcopy submissions will not be accepted or processed.

You must complete all elements of the application, including accurate photos of stall/van set-up and entire product range to be sold at the market , copies of current Food Registrations, Streatrader number, or your application will not be reviewed.

Selection Criteria

Criteria Arts & Craft Applications

Selection of applicants is based on the following criteria:

  1. All products must be designed and hand made by the artist or designed by the artist with the production outsourced to suppliers located within Australia and all details disclosed on the Application Form submitted
  2. No products designed or made overseas are accepted
  3. Quality hand made products designed, partially or wholly produced and sold by applicant or their approved representative Anesthetic / artistic merit
  4. Quality of product (design / technique / finish)
  5. Artistic innovation, uniqueness, original design
  6. Level of skill reflected in goods
  7. Selection will be made to maintain a balance of media represented at the market

Other considerations:

  1. Ability to present goods appropriately and well in a market context
  2. Quality of presentation and packaging
  3. Current trends and products with broad customer or seasonal appeal
  4. Ability to sustain quality of work for stall over time (more important for permanent stallholders)
  5. Indigenous art policy guidelines

Permit Types

Casual Stall:
Approved Stallholders who wish to trade on a casual basis must book via Make a Booking and make payment prior to trading. Wednesdays at 12pm each week is the cut off for bookings and payments. Invoices not paid by this time will not beable to trade and will forfit their trading ability at the Market.

All casuals start on a probationary casual permit - the period lasts for 3 months or a minimum of 12 market trades. The probationary period must be completed before a permanent request can be made for trading. The stallholders will be eligible to renew the permit after the probationary period, provided the stallholder has been abiding by the rules and regulations of the market.

Casual stallholders must trade at least once within a 6 month period to keep an active status.

Permanent Stall:

Approved Stallholders who wish to trade on a permanent basis must attend the market on a weekly basis. You will be required to notify the Market Manager for any absences that are more than 4 weeks.    Permanent LSL - eligible after every 8 years of trade for three months (taken in total), stall locations will be reserved for your return.

There are no cancelations, credits or refunds for any booking type made


General Public Liability for standard Art and Craft Makers is covered by the Market and included as part of your trading permit.

However: Insurance is required if a stallholder sells the below items. They must have in place a public and product liability policy with a minimum of $10 million cover in the stallholders name if the stallholder offers for sale any of the products listed below.

  • Cosmetics and beauty products
  • Medicines, Potions, Oils, Fragrances and Soaps

A copy of the Insurance Certificate of Currency must be attached to your applcaition as an attachment.

It is the responsibility of the stallholder to ensure that the insurance is renewed and remains current for the term that the Stallholder undertakes trading activity at the Market.


Permit Conditions and Local Laws

City of Port Phillip Local Law #1
The Market falls under Port Phillip Local Law #1 Community Amenity and its Procedures and Protocols Manual. A copy may be obtained in full from the Council website at or can be sent to you by the Market Manager.


Application Process and Deadlines

Applications will be assessed on an individual basis.

Outcome of application
All applications are reviewed as often as possible. The Market Manager will notify applicants of the outcome of their application within 2 weeks.

No further correspondence will be entered into with unsuccessful applicants from this point forward. Acceptance and non-acceptance is at the discretion of Market Management. Management reserves the right to reject applications and not to enter into any correspondence about the decision. All decisions made by management are final.

Waiting list
A waiting list may be formed for successful applicants whose products are currently over-represented at the market. Applicants on the waiting list will not be contacted until a place becomes available. There is no time frame placed on the wait.


Arts/Craft and Pre-packaged Food 2.4M marquees:

Casual stalls:

  • $80.15 per day  or $89.40 (if Trading or starting from Oct to 31 March)

Permanent stalls: (no credit for St Kilda Festival Day off)

  • $652.40 for 3 months. (January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December) or $719.20(if Trading or starting from Oct to 31 March)
  • $1,191.80 for 6 months (January-June, July-December)
  • $2,219.20 for 12 months (July-June)

Arts/Craft and Pre-packaged Food 3M marquees

Casual stalls:

  • $89.40 per day or $98.50 (if Trading or starting from Oct to 31 March)

Permanent stalls: (no credit for St Kilda Festival Day off)

  • $717.10 for 3 months. (January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December) or $791.10 (if Trading or starting from Oct to 31 March)
  • $1,309.95 for 6 months (January-June, July-December)
  • $2,442.10 for 12 months (July-June)

(Stall fees are subject to annual increases)

Book Selection Criteria

Books must:

  • Not give deliberate offense, vilifying specific groups in our community on the basis of sexuality, religion, race etc.
  • Books must be written by the seller/s
  • Have quality publication and production
  • Books must not be second-hand
  • Small and or non for profit organizations may apply
  • Authority and Accuracy. (This is especially important with items covering medicine and health but could be applied to other topics such as history)

Permit conditions:

  • Permit is issued for books that have been applied for and accepted via selection process
  • 3 month maximum trade term per book
  • Any new literature must go through the selection process.
